HECK’s Becky Shows Us How She Can Help With The Team’s Mental Health & Wellbeing

HECK’s Becky has risen to the #showemwhatyouremadeof challenge at the HECK factory. Here she explains her desire to help her colleagues with strength, mobility and flexibility, as well as helping them manage day-to-day stresses through Pilates. 


As part of our #showemwhatyouremadeof campaign, HECK’s Becky is training to be a Pilates teacher.  Here she explains in her own words how she wants to make a difference to improve the health and wellbeing of everyone who works at HECK.


“Whilst thinking of ideas about how the HECK team can ’Show ‘Em What You’re Made Of’, I made a suggestion that someone could become a qualified Pilates or yoga teacher and could share their skillset internally.  I felt that this would benefit our team both physically and mentally by bringing a routine that’s really helpful right to our doorstep. At the time, I didn’t really think that person could be me, but then I thought ‘what the HECK?’


Factory workers can sometimes experience aches and pains from performing repetitive tasks down on the factory floor; drivers and office workers like me also sometimes get into bad habits when sitting down at a desk or in a car for long periods. 


I grew up attending regular gymnastics classes and really enjoy keeping fit, so I am familiar with some movements in Pilates and how I have found it to be a real benefit for improving my balance, my core strength and flexibility. I thought it would be great to introduce others to this low impact fitness technique too.

As well as the health and fitness aspects that Pilates can help with, it’s also a really good form of exercise to help with managing stress.  We all have our ups and downs in life, and Covid19 has certainly brought stress along with it in many forms for many people.  Some people might deal with this by craving some physical activity as an escape, others may just fancy trying a new activity or are in need of some social contact, a bit of fun!


I came to realise that I would love the opportunity to teach others a skill that would hopefully improve their posture, flexibility, strength, fitness or mind-set. And so after making the suggestion I decided to sign up for this challenge. 

I realise there’s a lot to learn in theory and in practice in order that I can teach people safely and pass on these techniques, but I can imagine it will be very rewarding passing on skills to those who decide to take part in my lessons. I have already signed up to a level 3 Pilates instructor course and will start my training immediately in the hope to begin teaching in June!”


Our #showemwhatyourmadeof campaign was started at the end of 2020 by HECK’s Jack who undertook an amazing fundraising walk from Yorkshire to Cornwall, and it’s great to see people signing up and joining in.   We’ll keep you posted on how the team are doing, so keep an eye on our blog.  In meantime, if you would like to show *US* what you’re made of, get in touch!  We’d love to hear from you.
