Ingredients:

1 pack of Meat Free Chipolatas

700g strong white flour, plus 5 tbsp for crosses

3x 7g sachets of fast action dried yeast

2tsp salt

500ml milk, warmed

140g mature cheddar, grated

5 tbsp grated parmesan

5 tbsp water

1 egg, whisked with a fork to brush over the buns

Ketchup, optional

Salad, optional

Butter, optional

Method:

  1. Heat the milk up and mix the yeast, flour and 2 teaspoons of salt together. Make a well in the middle of the flour mixture and pour the milk. Mix together until it has formed into a soft dough, then knead for 10 mins. Put back in the bowl, cover and leave somewhere warm (by a radiator etc) until it has doubled in size, for around 30 mins.
  2. Take the dough out of the bowl onto a lightly floured surface and knead in most of the cheese. Divide the dough into 12 balls, and place on a lined baking tray. Cover again and leave somewhere warm for 20 mins or so, until the balls have doubled in size again.
  3. Heat the oven to 180°C. Brush the egg over the buns and scatter some cheese on top of each one. Mix the 5 tbsp of flour, water, and parmesan for the crosses. Drizzle or pipe onto each bun in a cross shape, then place into the oven for 20-25 mins, until the buns are golden.
  4. Fry the sausages in a pan with a little oil until cooked through. Once the hot cross buns are cooked, slice in half and add the butter/salad/ketchup, then add 2 sausages on top.
